You've Been Packing the Wrong Birth Bag. (Here's What Actually Gets You Through Labor.)
Most birth bags (if they’re even prepackaged!) look the same. A comfy robe, a few toiletries, and baby’s first blanket.
Labor is physical work. Hard, sustained, hours-long work. Your uterus is contracting again and again to bring your baby into the world, and your body needs real, practical support to keep going.
The good news? What actually makes a difference is simple, inexpensive, and fits in a small bag.
Here are five labor support essentials that will genuinely carry you through active labor, transition, and pushing, straight from the birth floor.
Hydration, Hydration, Hydration!
If you have a support water bottle, now is the time to bring it!
Your uterus is a muscle. And like any muscle working really, really hard, it needs fluid to keep contracting efficiently from the first wave all the way to the last.
Dehydration does not just slow things down. It makes contractions hurt worse than they need to. You do not want that.
Water works! But electrolytes are even better. Something like LMNT, Instant Hydration, Needed Electrolytes are great options, or you can make your own labor aid at home. Whatever your preference, your support person's job is to keep that cup coming your way throughout your entire birthing process.
Sip consistently. Do not wait until you're thirsty.
Power Up: Food!
You would never run 26 miles on an empty stomach. Labor is no different.
In the early stages, eat a real meal. Build that reserve. Protein, carbs, something that will give you the fuel to continue on. Because once you're rocking and rolling in active labor, big meals are off the table. But small bites are absolutely still on.
Fruits, peanut butter jelly sandwich, toast with honey on it, goo packs, and applesauce are all solid options for mid-labor fuel. But one of the absolute favorites toward the end of labor is honey sticks. Just bite the tip and let them absorb in your mouth. Quick, easy, and they give you a little pick me up exactly when you need it most.
Even if you do not feel like eating, take small bites every 30 minutes. Have your support person offer it. That is their job too.
Hot, Cold, Hot Again: A Wet Washcloth
Your body's temperature regulation goes completely sideways in labor. You're hot. Then you're freezing. Then you're sweating again. Repeat for several hours.
A slightly damp washcloth is one of the most underrated tools in the birth bag. Applied to your forehead, chest, or the back of your neck, it feels real good in a way that is hard to explain until you're in it.
Open it fully and lay it across your lower back during a contraction. Or whirl it through the air as a makeshift fan when you're burning up.
It sounds simple because it is. That is the point.
Cool Air on Demand: The Handheld Fan
The handheld fan is the washcloth's best friend. Small, inexpensive, and absolutely worth packing.
These come with a couple of different speeds, and your partner can direct the airflow wherever you need it, your face, your chest, your neck. You can hold it yourself between contractions, too. That cool air moving across your skin during a hard wave makes a real difference.
Do not skip this one.
The Person Carrying the Bag!
You can be perfectly hydrated, well-fed, and physically supported, and still hit a wall.
Labor is long. Transition especially will take everything you have. There will likely be a moment where you want to quit, where you feel like you cannot go further.
That’s where the most important thing to bring to your birth comes in.
Who is your birthing support!
You need someone in your corner during labor. Someone to hold your hand when you’re ready to give up.
That is exactly when encouragement becomes non-negotiable.
You can do this.
You and your baby are working together.
You will meet your baby soon.
You've got this!
Words land differently when your body is pushed to its limit. Real, specific, steady encouragement from your partner, your doula, or your support person will carry you through physically, mentally, and emotionally when nothing else can.
Make sure your birth team knows this going in. It is not optional.
Healthy Mommy, Healthy Baby, Labor On!
