5 Reasons You’re Not Dilating
We have a problem with how we talk about dilation.
The moment a pregnant woman hears they're "not dilating," panic sets in. Suddenly, the entire birth feels like it's failing.
But dilation is one piece of a much bigger picture, and our obsession with it is getting in the way of trusting a process that has worked since the beginning of human life.
Here are five real reasons your body may not be dilating, and none of them mean something is wrong with you.
#1 You're Not in Labor Yet
This one sounds obvious, but it gets overlooked constantly.
If you're at the end of pregnancy and not having contractions, your cervix does not have to be open.
Not everyone walks into their birthing day with any dilation at all, and that is completely normal.
Your cervix can be fully closed right up until labor begins and still do exactly what it needs to do when the time comes.
A closed cervix before labor is not a warning sign. It's just a cervix doing its job.
#2 Your Contractions Aren't Strong Enough Yet
Your body may already be contracting, but not all contractions are created equal.
Think of it like a warm-up at the gym. Your uterus is a muscle, and it has to build up before it can go all out. Early contractions are often short, irregular, and mild. They're real, but they're not yet powerful enough to push your baby's head firmly down onto the cervix.
That pressure is what actually opens you up. Your cervix doesn't just decide to dilate. It responds to your baby's head pressing against it, consistently and with force. No pressure, no change. It's that simple.
When contractions are still light or inconsistent, your body is building. The contractions will get longer, stronger, and closer together. When they do, your cervix will open with a good position baby for birth.
#3 Your Bladder and Bowel Are Full
No one wants to talk about it, but a healthy bowel movement is never more critical than before and during labor.
Waste in your body takes up space your baby needs to move through your pelvis. A full bladder or a loaded colon physically crowds the area, making it harder for your baby to descend and press on the cervix the way it needs to.
The fix is simple: use the restroom at least every hour during labor.
Keep those organs empty. Your baby needs room in the pelvis to descend applying direct pressure on the cervix.
#4 You're Running on Empty
Labor is a marathon. Your uterus is a muscle, and it is working harder than it ever has.
Muscles need fuel. They need water. Without both, your body will stall, not because something is wrong, but because it has nothing left to burn.
Think of it like running your car with no gasoline. You can keep going for a while, but eventually, the engine stalls and you have to call for help to get it going again.
Eat real food in early labor. Deink water and electrolytes consistently throughout.
Personally, I recommend keeping small honey sticks and ‘goo packs’ like apple sauce on hand.
They’re small, easy snacks, able to be used one-handed, and full of the energy your body needs to labor on!
#5 Your Baby Isn't in the Right Position
Position is everything when it comes to cervical change.
Ideally, the top of your baby's head, also known as the crown, is pressing evenly down onto the cervix, creating the pressure needed to dilate.
But babies don't always line up perfectly. They can be too tucked, slightly flexed, shifted to one side (called asynclitic), or facing the wrong direction (posterior instead of anterior).
When a baby is well-positioned, labor progresses. When a baby is off, dilation slows or stalls. This is not failure.
This is your body and your baby working through the positioning process together.
Your Body Is Not the Problem!
Our culture is fixated on getting babies out, and that fixation creates unnecessary fear.
Your body is not a machine on a deadline. When your baby is ready, it will signal your body to go. When labor is hot and heavy, your cervix will open.
Trust the process. Empty your bladder. Eat something. And give your body the time it's asking for.
